Like drinking champagne in a crystal flute, drinking matcha in a Japanese tea bowl, known as a chawan, enhances the experience. The traditional Japanese tea ceremony centers on the preparation, serving and drinking of matcha as hot tea and embodies a meditative, spiritual style. The whisk (chasen) is used to mix the matcha powder with water or milk.
 
Sweet foods are usually served with matcha to offset the vegetal flavor of the tea. Matcha can be prepared as a thick or thin tea.
 
Thick matcha: use 3 teaspoons of tea to 1 cup of hot water. 
Thin matcha: use 1 teaspoon of matcha to 1 cup of hot water. It is entirely up to individual taste.
